5 Interview Techniques in “Shattered Glass” That Helps To Bring Out The Best Stories

  • Shattered Glass”, the movie about the career life of reporter Stephen Glass contained hidden tips on how to carry out an interview. We caught some and we thought it would be worthwhile to share with you.
  • Mindset to bring to an interview: Value people over stories. Interviewing is all about telling the best story from another person’s perspective. Think about questions you can ask, but make sure to listen carefully on what they’re telling you. We rate this a solid 8, because a good mindset is what you want to be prepared before you interview.
  • Record everything single thing. At the interview, look around and write down what you see, what you hear, what you smell, and write down everything. Because some of the small things you write down, can impact the whole story. This tip gets a 9 because of all the side stories that comes out of the small details you record down.
  • Bring attention to detail. Do you hear a slight sound of classical music in the background? Do you see that unfinished can of Fresca? Now think why are there these things in this setting. Classical music because your interviewee may be old school, and have a calm personality. Can of Fresca, well it could be that person you’re talking to might have illness related to glucose. Because Fresca is sugar-free. These side information would have only been available if you recorded every single detail. 9, the same rating as the tip above. They both need to be carried out for the full effect.
  • Stay unbiased. From the last tip, we told you to question the details. But no matter how good of an answer you got from within yourself, it’s really just an assumption. Now your story could have a hole that you just can’t wait to just fill up with the assumption you came up with. But confirm it first, to make sure you’re not lying to your readers. Only a 7, but it could lead to career-ending trouble.
  • Build reputation. Once you’ve gained the trust of the public, by creating content that they find entertaining and factual (as long as they don’t find out right?) . You’ll start to add building blocks to your name. Then as you progress with more phenomenal works that they love, you have then built yourself a tall structure called “reputation”. You stand on it, and you receive more recognition as others who carry a high reputation are more willing to be interviewed by you and allow you to make a story upon them. The process is exciting and rewarding. But don’t forget, the higher you are, the harder you’ll fall. We rate this tip a solid 8, it’s a good tip but it’s something that takes time. It’s doesn’t show instant results compared to our other tips.
  • In conclusion, knowing different interviewing techniques can boost ones efficiency, value and importance as an interviewer.
